Explanation: Both the IDSA and AMDA discourage antibiotic treatment for asymptomatic bacteriuria and note that elderly patients and nursing home residents are a high risk of receiving unnecessary antibiotics. By themselves the following symptoms are NOT necessarily indicative of a UTI: Malodorous urine, Falls, Confusion, positive UA or urine culture. If our patient was experiencing dysuria with suprapubic pain, flank pain, hematuria or had systemic signs of infection like fever treatment would be indicated. Unnecessary antibiotic therapy for asymptomatic bacteriuria can lead to harm like C. difficile without any benefit. Know the ABCs of ASB and protect patients!
